What Is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy ?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based talking therapy that helps individuals understand the link between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It offers practical tools to manage difficult emotions, reduce behaviours that challenge, and build emotional resilience.
At Prudent Supported Living, CBT is offered as an additional, paid service to enhance our core supported living provision. It is delivered by trained therapists with experience working alongside people with learning disabilities, autism, and complex needs.
Why We Offer CBT
Prudent Supported Living provides supported living services for adults with autism, learning disabilities, mental health conditions, and complex or high-support needs. Many people who use these services are moving on from residential care, specialist schools, or secure settings, while others may be accessing care and support services for the first time.
All services are built around each person’s unique needs, strengths, and aspirations. The goal is not just to offer support, but to create a foundation for people to live fulfilling, connected, and self-directed lives.
Moving on from higher dependency placements
Managing emotional regulation difficulties
Adjusting to new environments or support models
Preparing for increased independence
This additional therapeutic input can make a significant difference in how someone understands themselves, manages stress, and relates to others. CBT supports individuals to:
Respond more calmly in stressful situations
Reduce anxiety, anger, or distress
Improve confidence and communication
Build lasting strategies for emotional wellbeing
Strengthen relationships and social connections
Set and work toward achievable personal goals
Real Outcomes, Real Progress
Our CBT service is not just therapeutic — it’s transformational.
In one case, an individual receiving CBT reduced their weekly support needs by over 200 hours within 12 months. Emotional stability improved, confidence grew, and reliance on 2:1 staffing was gradually stepped down. This outcome reflected the long-term value of targeted therapeutic input in helping people live more independently.
Such outcomes also support more sustainable, cost-effective care for local authorities and professionals planning future placements.
How the Service Works
CBT at Prudent is always tailored to the individual, with sessions being flexible in frequency and format. Our therapeutic team works closely with support staff to ensure strategies are reinforced consistently across daily life.
Progress is reviewed regularly, with clearly defined goals and collaborative feedback built into the process.
